GATE Exam 2026: Admit Card, Syllabus, Eligibility, Registration, Pattern
GATE Exam 2026: The GATE 2026 application form has been released on 28 August 2025 by IIT Guwahati at the official website gate2026.iitg.ac.in. Students who want to apply should carefully check the eligibility criteria before fill out the form. The process includes registering online, filling personal and academic details, uploading documents, and paying the application fee. The form can only be submitted online. The last date to complete the GATE 2026 registration without a late fee is 7 October 2025 while applications with a late fee will be until 13 October 2025. For exam preparation, candidates are advised to review the GATE syllabus and exam pattern 2026, and practice previous year papers to get a better idea of the question style and marking scheme.
GATE Exam 2026 Latest Updates

- GATE 2026 Application rectification date is opening on 28 October 2025 (Tuesday) and the deadline is 10 November 2025 (Monday).
GATE is a national-level examination conducted by IISc and all IITs to assess candidates seeking admission to Master’s, Direct Doctoral, and Doctoral programs. The application fee for general candidates is INR 2000, and for SC/ST/Female/PwD candidates, the application fee is INR 1000. If the candidates are applying during the extended online registration window, the application fee for the general and reserved candidates will be INR 2500 and INR 1500, respectively.
Candidates applying for the GATE exam must ensure they have a UG degree program or any government-approved degree program in relevant fields. In addition to this, the candidates who are currently pursuing a bachelor’s program and are in the third or higher year.

GATE Exam 2026
The GATE Exam 2026 will be organised by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati and will be held online in different cities. The national-level examination evaluates candidates based on their understanding of various UG-level subjects in Technology/Engineering/Architecture/Humanities/Arts/Science. The GATE 2026 application form process will commence on 28 August 2025, and the window for online registration will be closed by 7 October 2025. The extended online registration date with late fee is 13 October 2025.
All the general category candidates, including foreign nationals, will have to pay an application fee of INR 2000 in the regular period, and INR 2500 in the extended period. For the SC/ST/Women/PwD candidates, the application fee during the regular period is INR 1000 and INR 1500 during the extended period.
The GATE 2026 examination will take place on February 7, 8, 14, and 15. The admit card is expected to be made available in the 1st week of January 2026. Conducted in CBT mode, the test will follow an English medium only. Students will encounter MCQ, MSQ, and NAT questions. With a total of 30 test papers, candidates also have the flexibility to choose either one or two papers this year.

GATE Admit Card 2026
GATE 2026 Admit Card is expected to be released in the first week of January. However, the exact date for the admit card release will be announced on the official website soon. The IIT Guwahati will be releasing the GATE Admit Card 2026 upon the completion of the online registration process. Candidates who have completed their registration will be able to gain access to their admit cards via the GOAPS portal. To download the hall ticket for the GATE 2026 exam, the candidates must visit the official portal at gate2026.iitg.ac.in and login with their enrollment ID and password.
All the candidates are required to possess a hard copy of their admit cards, as it will be the hall ticket for the GATE 2026 exam. The admit card will comprise important details like the exam centre location, candidate’s enrollment number, photo, signature, and exam slot timing. In addition to this, the candidates will have to carry with them a valid ID proof such as an AADHAR Card, PAN Card, Driving Licence, or Voter ID card.
GATE Answer Key 2026
IIT Guwahati, the organizer of the GATE 2026 exam, will be releasing the answer key for the exam upon the conclusion of the exam schedule for 7, 8, 14 & 15 February 2026. The GATE 2026 answer key will be made available in 2 versions one will be a provisional answer key, and the other will be a final answer key. Candidates will be able to download both the answer keys, along with their response sheet, on the official portal. The provisional answer key can be accessed by candidates by logging in with their enrollment IDs and passwords. Upon the release of the provisional answer key, candidates will be allowed to raise objections, which will be subject to review before the release of the final answer key.
GATE Result 2026
The GATE Result 2026 will be out on 19 March 2026 (Thursday), on the official website gate2026.iitg.ac.in. Candidates will be able to download their GATE 2026 scorecards by logging into the official website with their enrollment ID and password. The GATE 2026 examination is set to be conducted on 7, 8, 14, and 15 February 2026. The last date to download the GATE 2026 scorecard is 31 December 2026, allowing students to download their scorecards with late fee of INR 500. The GATE 2026 scorecard will be valid for 3 years. Candidates can find their name, photograph, registration number, examination paper, GATE score, AIR, marks out of 100, and the total number of candidates that appeared for the examination.
GATE 2026 Counselling and Seat Allotment Process
The GATE 2026 counselling process will begin once the results for the exam are declared 19 March 2026 (Thursday). Here’s how candidates can participate in the GATE 2026 counselling session:
Step 1: Candidates are first required to download their respective scorecards once the results for the GATE 2026 are declared.
Step 2: The next step is to register on the relevant counselling portals, such as CCMT for NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs, and COAP for IITs and IISc.
Step 3: Several PSUs and institutions have their application processes; hence, the candidates must check for specific procedures.
Step 4: Upon registering on the counselling portals, candidates will have to fill in their college choices and program preferences.
Step 5: The next step for the candidates will be to participate in the seat allotment rounds.
Step 6: Upon participating in the seat allotment round, the candidates will have the option to accept or reject the allotted seat.
Step 7: If the candidate chooses to accept the allotted seat, the next step is to pay the acceptance fee and submit the required documents.
Step 8: The final admission of a candidate will be confirmed upon paying the fee and fulfilling all the formalities as per the allotted institute.
GATE Exam Pattern & Marking Scheme
The GATE 2026 exam will consist of 30 test papers (subjects) and will comprise two sections: General Aptitude (GA) and Candidate’s Selected Subject(s). The duration of the exam will be 3 hours, and there will be 3 types of questions: MCQ, MSQ, and NAT. All the questions in the exam will carry either 1 mark or 2 marks, and the total marks are 100. There is negative marking in the GATE 2026 exam, and candidates can check the marking details below:
- In MCQs, for every question answered incorrectly, there will be negative marking.
- 1/3rd mark will be deducted for a 1-mark MCQ answered wrong.
- 2/3rd mark will be deducted for a 2-mark MCQ answered wrong.
- There will be no negative marking for wrong answers to NAT or MSQs.
- There will be no partial marking in MSQ.

GATE 2026 Eligibility Criteria
Candidates applying for GATE 2026 must have completed or be in the final year of their Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Technology, Architecture, Science, Commerce, or Arts from a recognized university. There is no age limit for appearing in the exam. Students currently in the third year or above of their undergraduate program are also eligible. International students from approved countries with equivalent qualifications can apply as well.
General Eligibility
- Nationality: Both Indian citizens and foreign nationals can apply for the GATE 2026 exam.
- Age Limit: There is no upper age limit for postgraduate programs.
Educational Qualification
- Minimum Degree Requirement:
To be eligible for the GATE 2026 exam, candidates must have completed their graduation from any government-approved degree program in any of the following streams:
- Engineering
- Technology
- Architecture
- Science
- Commerce
- Humanities
- Arts
Candidates who have obtained their bachelor’s degree from foreign nations can also apply, provided they completed their graduation from any of the above-mentioned streams.
- Final-Year Students: Candidates who are in their third year or higher years of their graduation are also eligible for the GATE 2026 examination.

GATE Application Form 2026
The GATE Application Form 2026 has been released on 28 August 2025 (Thursday). Candidates looking forward to appearing for the GATE 2026 exam can apply till 7 October 2025 (Tuesday), without late fee. For candidates applying later than that, the extended deadline with late fee for application submission would be 13 October 2025 (Monday).
Candidates applying for the GATE 2026 exam will have to pay an application fee of INR 2000 (general category, including foreign nationals) and INR 1000 (SC/ST/Women/PwD category) during the regular period.
